When the cursed pirate Captain Barbossa kidnaps the governor's daughter, Elizabeth Swann, to unlock an ancient Aztec curse, a blacksmith named Will Turner teams up with the eccentric, exiled Captain Jack Sparrow to rescue her and reclaim Jack's stolen ship, the Black Pearl. Barbossa and his crew require the blood of Will Turner—the son of their former crewmate Bootstrap Bill—along with all 882 stolen gold coins to break the curse that turns them into immortal skeletons under the moonlight. Following a series of betrayals and epic naval battles on the mysterious Isla de Muerta, Will returns the final blood-stained coin just as Jack shoots Barbossa, making the pirates mortal once again and allowing Jack to escape execution and reclaim his title as captain.
